Your first session

What happens in a first therapy session

Your first session is a chance to talk about what has brought you here, at your own pace, and to see how it feels to work together. There is nothing you need to prepare.

Step by step

From first contact to regular sessions

  1. Step 01

    Arrange an initial consultation

Send me a short email with a few times that suit you. The consultation lasts 50 minutes and is a chance to talk about what has brought you to therapy, ask questions and decide whether working together feels right.

  2. Step 02

    The first session

We talk about what is happening for you now, a little about your background, and what you hope might change. You share only what you are ready to share.

  3. Step 03

    Deciding together

At the end, we reflect on how it felt and agree whether, and how, to continue.

It is normal to feel nervous

Many people feel unsure before a first session. You might worry about not knowing what to say, getting upset, or being judged. All of that is welcome. My job is to make the space feel as comfortable as possible.

If you are meeting online, find somewhere private where you won’t be overheard, and give yourself a few minutes before and after. If we are meeting in Farringdon, I will send directions in advance.

Questions

Before your first session

What if I don’t know what to say?

That is completely fine. I will gently guide the conversation, and silence is allowed too.

Do I have to talk about my past?

Only if and when you want to. Some people find it helpful, others focus on what is happening now. You stay in control of what you share.

What if it doesn’t feel like a good fit?

That is important to know, and you are free to stop at any time. If it helps, I can suggest other places to find support.
